All of Us Are Dead
All of Us Are Dead: A Binge-Worthy Zombie Apocalypse with Heart (Review)
All of Us Are Dead, a 2022 South Korean Netflix series, injects fresh blood (pun intended) into the zombie genre. While it tackles familiar themes of survival and human nature in the face of a deadly outbreak, the series excels with its strong characters, emotional depth, and unique take on the infected.
Strengths:
- Compelling Characters: The show focuses on a diverse group of high school students trapped in their school turned ground zero for the zombie outbreak. Each character has their own flaws, motivations, and struggles, making them relatable and engaging. You'll find yourself rooting for them, mourning their losses, and cheering for their victories.
- Emotional Depth: Beyond the zombie chaos, All of Us Are Dead explores themes of bullying, friendship, first love, and the sacrifices we make for those we care about. This emotional core elevates the show from pure horror to a story that resonates on a deeper level.
- Fast-Paced Action: The series doesn't shy away from intense action sequences with creative and gruesome depictions of the fast-moving, rage-fueled zombies. Be prepared for some nail-biting encounters.
- Unique Take on the Infected: The series introduces a twist on the classic zombie with the idea of "hammers," infected individuals who retain some semblance of their human selves. This adds a layer of complexity and ethical dilemma to the fight for survival.
Weaknesses:
- Uneven Pacing: While the first few episodes are strong, the middle section can feel slightly repetitive. There are moments where character development takes a backseat to action sequences.
- Questionable Decisions: Some character choices can be frustratingly illogical, pushing the boundaries of believability and causing viewers to yell at the screen.
- Length: With 12 episodes, the series might feel long for some viewers.
Overall:
All of Us Are Dead is a compelling and entertaining addition to the zombie genre. Its focus on character development, emotional depth, and a unique twist on the infected elevates it beyond a gore-fest. While some pacing issues and questionable decisions might hold it back from greatness, the show's strengths outweigh its weaknesses, making it a binge-worthy watch.
Recommendation:
If you're looking for a zombie apocalypse story with a strong emotional core and well-developed characters, All of Us Are Dead is a must-watch. Fans of Korean dramas and thrilling action scenes will find plenty to enjoy. Just be prepared for some frustrating moments and a lengthy commitment.
I would personally rate this tv series a solid 4 stars out of 5
